about

Performing during the beginning of the 1980s, Eye5 were a unique electronic duo—at least for the Central Valley of California—who enjoyed a small but loyal following of punks and weirdos as they played at area clubs and schools. Kit Watson and Gary Bell also took advantage of their role as roadies for a much more popular band at the time, Knockout, to step in as their opening act on a number of occasions. While this was an odd combination of musical styles, it worked. The audiences steadily grew, with everyone there to see both acts.

"The Man from 5" was the song that Eye5 played to open their set, because they felt that the intro with the huge bass synth sequence was a good attention getter. Lots of audiences who hadn't see them before were expecting them to get up there and sound all anemic and plinky-plink. But they weren't. They were harsh synth monsters, playing loud and very distorted.

On October 23, 1983—for their final show as it turned out—the band headlined at Blackwater Cafe in Stockton, CA for a raucous night of energetic electronic punk-pop. As Kit and Gary jumped off the stage at the end of their set, they were greeted by two members of a band that had just imploded, and were invited to join a new project they were putting together called Spot The Dog... and Eye5 ended.

This is a faithful re-recording of the song. Made available in high-resolution.
